Size Requirements for Different Types of Labels

Labels come in many different sizes and styles.  Here is information about the size requirements for the differing types of labels.

Roll Labels
Here is list of information that will be required when you are ordering roll labels.

Size of the label
Repeat length
Type of Label – for example butt-cut, die cut, or sleeve
Dimensions for the following: edge trim, gap, or sleeve circumference
Location and size of perforations
Diameter of the inside core of the roll

Here are some helpful terms for ordering roll labels:
Inside Core Diameter – This measurement needs to be able to meet the requirements of both the label printer and label applicator.
Roll Diameter – Again, this measurement will be in part determined by the capabilities of the label printer and label applicator. It will also be determined by the number of labels ordered.
Roll Wind – Labels can be rolled either face in or face out, and may or may not contain tractor feed holes.

Fanfold Labels
Here is the size information you will need in order to place an order for fanfold labels.

Repeat length
Size of label
Carrier Size (Label liner)
Number of labels along the width of the sheet
Dimension of gap between the labels
Dimension of edge trim
If your printer has stack size limitations: maximum stack size

It is important to note that both manufacturing specifications and your printer’s capabilities will restrict label and carrier size.

Laser Sheet Labels
This is the information you will need to properly order laser sheet labels.

Repeat length
Size of sheet
Number of labels for both the width and the height
Gap size between labels

Laser sheet labels usually come in two standard sheet sizes, 8 1/2" x 11" and 8 1/2" x 14".

Individual Labels
Below is the information you will need for ordering the various types of individual labels.

Pressure Sensitive Labels
Size of label
Size of carrier, if it is larger than the label
If needed, gap and edge trim dimensions
Whether the slip is to be located on the liner or the face of the label, as well as where it should be placed

Container Labels
Sleeve circumference of size of flat label
If needed, die cut shape
Location and size of any perforations

It is always a good idea to check with a manufacturer regarding their standard label sizes prior to making a custom order for any type of label. Manufacturers often have standard sizes that will meet your requirements, saving you the time and expense of placing a custom order.
